TNTP’s mentoring program is named in honor of Layla Avila, one of TNTP’s first leaders, who passed away in November of 2020. Throughout her life she always kept students at the center and worked diligently to create spaces and opportunities for leaders of color. From her own experience as a student, she never lost sight of the power of providing access and opportunity. After TNTP, she co-founded Education Leaders of Color, a crucial space for people of color in our sector and one of the most powerful forces for positive change in education. Her life and career centered on creating access and carving out pathways. With this recognition, we honor and recognize the deep impact she had on others through mentorship.
